Nice vid. New to the area so it's helpful to get an in-person view of the topography and layout. Sad to see the haters on your boards – seems like they're missing the bigger picture of fishing in general.
BTW, what roads are you taking? I've been cutting through Sedalia and 67/Pine Creek, but it looks like you're on a bigger highway, which seems more conducive to the winter months.
If you still live in Colorado we should definitely get out there after this pandemic. I enjoy your videos, keep them coming. I seen in a recent comment that you haven't been out in a while. Same here! But I had got out the house for some errands in Idaho springs and seen some fly fishers and I stopped to watch and BOOM! I caught the urge and haven't stopped thinking of fishing Since.
Nice dude, I'm new to the area and have been wondering where to go fishing. I'm from New Mexico, and the San Juan is number one in my book for fishing. Great video.
Next time you should keep pressure on the fish, use the running river to your advantage to keep them hooked. You fish like you've only been at a pond or some slow slow running water. I hope you dont take this as rude, just a little constructive criticism. Good luck next time
This is my favorite fishing river in Colorado. I can tell you're probably not getting your flies down deep enough in some spot. Presentation is key in the canyon! Maybe I'll see you there next time you decide to fish. Tight lines!
As if there aren't already too many crazy crowds here, you literally start your vid with a map on how to get to this spot, then show exactly how to hike to the river.
Cool, can't wait til you literally have to arrive by 4 am to get a parking spot and maybe half a hole to yourself.
Get yourself some size 22 24 zebra midges same size RS-2s down no smaller than18 Go to Blue Quill Anglers in Evergreen and talk to Pat Dorsey or buy his book on the S Platte and you will start catching them
Just caught some browns on the chocolate thunder today at Deckers. Rough up there today, icy. Last weekend though a buddy and I hit Cheesman and absolutely crushed!
I didn't hear you mention having any Jubilee Baetis in your gear. I've fished Deckers, 11 Mile Canyon, and Cheessman. I've always done well with them when the fish wouldn't take anything else. They're easy to tie all the way down to a #24 if needed. I've never had to use smaller than a #22 though. Normally #18's and #20's work fine. Black or red seem to be preferable colors too for whatever reason. Another thing I've found experimenting with variations is I have better luck when I use D rib material instead wire with this pattern. I think it traps more light and gives is the different hues a bug shell normal emits. You can get away with this down to a #20 but dropping down below that you either have to use wire or you can use another variation I came up with using small stretch tubing. The tubing stretches well to maintain the low profile and traps light good also. It also makes nice ribs. You can change the intensity of the color of the tubing by using lighter or darker thread base underneath. If I have a lot of time when tying I'll use the cement or epoxy like Charlie Craven uses on the flash, but if I'm in a hurry I don't. It makes a difference in the durability of the fly but not in the catch performance. I haven't experienced any difference in one vs the other as far as catching fish with them. I was fishing in 11 Mile Canyon once and found some fish in a pool above a small waterfall. Caught 3 on dries. As one would expect, the fly the fish wanted was the one I had the least of in my gear. #24 Baetis Dry in grey Dunn. Caught another one on a #20 hare's ear. Then nothing for several hours. Moved upstream to a small channel and made a few casts with one strike. Switched my rig to a hare's hear, SJW, and Jubilee Baetis as my trailer. Landed 14 fish in the next hour. 12 were on the jubilee and two on the sjw. One of the fish on the beats was a nice 20" Colorado cuttie. From my experience the fish in Deckers seem to prefer hares ear nymphs over the pheasant tail nymphs. Caught fish on both. Just more on the hare's ear. The only thing I can guess is the turkey tail wing case gives a more prominent profile of the back than the pheasant tail fibers. Trick to remember when using turkey tail fibers for small flies is to use the smaller base feathers instead of the larger fan feathers. The base tail feathers have a lot more shine to them also. Tight lines!!
Keep going man, I have had my days being skunked there but the one day that you do get into them you will be able to get into some monsters!!!! I left my lights on once and had to do the same exact thing. Thankfully we only had to wait for like 20 minutes before someone showed up. Now I carry one of those little chargers in my truck at all times :-).
Awesome video. Yeah the main food source is midges. Like the juju bee works well. I noticed u have a sage one 5wt, awesome rod but a softer tip works well with midges .
Great video. I love fishing and might be moving to Colorado soon and will for sure pick up fly fishing. Any recommendations on gear and fishing spots for a beginner?
Man I'm gonna take my spinning reel up there and wear them out soon. Great looking spot, but a fly rod would frustrate the shit out of me since I'm no good with it yet.

Great video man…me and some buddies are heading out to Cheesman this weekend to try and our luck on some trout.
What was the point of this video again? I mean aside from the self-indulgence?
Nice video man! Your content is great! Keep grinding. It will work out for you. Let's get a collab going.
Have you checked out Ascent Fly Fishing? Peter has some great gear and content to help you match the hatch to catch more fish.
Nice video man, and those tags are lit!!
