Glad you had fun! You can also fly fish for Bluegill, Crappie, Bass, pretty much any fish that live in 2-4 foot deep water. The reel can be used to reel in the fish, but you can do what you were doing. There are different lines (Sink tip, Intermediate sink, and full sink ) to go deeper. If you are going to have more fun than this, check with your doctor first!

keep the fish in the water… it is choking being held up like that… and debarb your hook, it will make it easier to remove the hook.

What is the reel for ?
There are two schools of thought .
1 : European style , the reel is just for storing the line and nothing more , fish are played from the hands .
2: American style . Wind in loose line once fish is hooked and play the fish from the reel .

I play fish from the hands it's a personal choice , I like the feel of the fight through line and rod without any mechanical interference .

Fly fishing only streams are a disgusting concept that should be illegal. There's no such thing as a spin rod only stream, why? Because the vast majority of fly fishermen are upper class suburban dads who know people in politics that allow these fly fishing only streams to happen. Ya this guy probably isn't a suburban dad but he's the exception. Your regular Joe that fishes with his spin rod and catches his limit should be allowed to fish these streams. I wish there were spin rod only streams so I wouldn't have to be lectured by some suburban dad with a $1500 rod wearing the whole Cabela's fly fishing aisle for actually catching and keeping trout and hear a speech on "catch and release" and that using lures and powerbait ruins it for fly fishermen.

The first fish I caught on a fly rod was a 5 pound catch fish on a six weight rod who rose to take my fly out of some fallen leaves freaked me out , one I did not know that catfish would rise and I did not know a catch fish would take a top water fly– and yeah it was a fight, Great job it is addictive

First fish I ever caught on a fly rod was a rainbow as well. Maybe a bit smaller than the one you caught. I was hooked from then on. Smallmouth are my personal favorite species. Get yourself some poppers and a few crayfish patterns and go to town. Tips: stripping line in is perfectly fine to do. I never use the reel to fight fish unless I’m going for large fish such as big largemouth or pike.

First of all you filmed an event. It was quite good and you were a humble fly fisherman, don't ever change from that. I'm sure you have advanced much from this experience . You performed exceptionally well and your control of the rod/ line really floored me. Well done and thanks for the video, your the guy we would all be proud to fish with. And lastly, your hooked.

Good job! When you are fighting fish try to use your real when you catch bigger ones, when you fight the fish one your real let the fish run when it wants to run, that is my favorite part of fly fishing

  9. Stop Motion Man says:

haha you keep saying you don't know what you're doing but you're fly fishing almost perfectly by the end of the video. Only thing you messed up on was not bringing a net. You should always bring a net fly fishing

Dude I learned this with a vintage spun fiberglass kit from a JCPenney in 1978. Still have the real. I've caught trout bluegill bass crappie and even a walleye on a black gnat. Fly-fishing is a blast and more versatile than most think!

the cast comes from the load of the tip. once you back cast, around as soon as your fly line passes just about all the way behind you, load your tip and cast forward. more wrist snapping action than using your whoe arm. good job first time
