KEEP THOSE FISH BREATHING! That is terrible handling. General rule, run a quarter mile sprint thinking someone is trying to k ill you. Then let your buddy dunk your head in a bucket of water as long as he can hold his breath at rest and add however long you kept that fish out of the water.
Welcome to the world of steelheading. That being said, since you asked… First of all…take that bobber off and swing a fly. Otherwise you might as well just fish a single hand rod. Thats the first thing you’re doing wrong. Second of all, with a two hander, the “hook set” isn’t really a hook set. It’s a low sweep into the bank. Third and foremost, keep steelhead in the water and breathing. Your handling of that fish wasn’t that great. Keep them in the water.
Good times. Show the fly and talk/describe the line and technique you are using (floating, sink tip etc.) it’s tough filming and even tougher editing. Personally I cast upstream with a floating line 8 wt. 14’ and stack mend with a big fly maybe weighted if legal, no indicator, tungsten bead and a super fluorocarbon dropper and down to a 14/16 pheasant tail or copper John tungsten beaded. Fished for a few years never caught a steelie but when I use trout nymphs , have caught big steelier and Chinook. Go Figure. When the fly gets straight beyond you it reaches max depth, tap, tap and on the 3rd tap is when the magic happens, if not finish the swing or retie a new rig, lol. Step and repeat. I start close, then mid and then max and step down. Some of my best fish have been off the end of my rod… 14’ away from me. Keep swinging my friend!
Your 2 handed rod with the indicator setup you are fishing… whats your setup… Ive been wanting to setup my 2 hander for indicator fishing and cant seem to figure it out. Genuinely curious what line you use, leader, etc.
Spey casting bobbers and eggs (is insanely funny) for summer run steelhead during the season that they are spawning in tribs like the south fork is crazy.. it’s crazy that this is even legal LOL.
Hope you guys enjoy this one! A little different film style but playing around with some new things, let me know what you think! (:
Beautiful fish.
Is this the snake river?
What weight rod are you using and what line is that? Great video!
Nice fish. My only comment is get them back in the water quicker.
What months do you target them as "spring run" in Idaho? I see no snow; however, the leaves look sparse, hence my question.

Just get a centerpin and be done with it 😂.
Let me know if you're ever in SE Idaho looking for someone to fish with. Love your stuff, thanks for sharing.
Real close to twenty
set your hooks downstream. 🙋🏼♀️
Spey is supposed to be a downstream cast 😉

What section was this on? Had my first steelhead trip up to Stanley area and couldn’t snag one. A lot to learn. Good vid!
