I broke my rule and let a grocer pick a fish sauce for me yesterday before I did the research. He told me Squid brand was very popular. Then I got home and discovered almost everyone HATES it. Until you, lol. I was going to return it but the good Asian market where I bought it is 30 minutes away so for $2.50 I may just suck it up and keep it in the pantry but swing by Whole Foods for some Red Boat. It's not that I don't trust you (I'm new to you today) but rather that I DO trust America's Test Kitchen who has never steered me in a bad direction. Ultimately everyone's palate is different and SOMEONE must be buying Squid brand because it's everywhere. Thanks for the video!

I bought the squid brand today but I want the red boat and the three crab too I love fish sauce straight up or as nuoc mam with chilies and vinegar as my dipping sauces.
I had pancit adobo chicken whole fried fish with sliced onions and red bell peppers and sweet chili sauce and a trio of fish sauce a spicy vinegar sauce and a sweet vinegar fish sauce blend and hot Thai pepper sauce everything was sooo good. 😋

I love fish sauce. It is my tomatoes sauce for spaghetti, and wow, that changed everything. But I have a question? Is there something I could do, to eliminate the fishy smell. My grown kids, both love cooking, love the taste but not the smell, at least in a spaghetti sauce

I loved this video! Thank you Pai! =^.^=! Any advice on how different, homemade, vegan fish sauces compare to the real thing, please? I became vegan before I was exposed to fish sauce, so I have nothing to compare it with. This is the recipe I have fermenting at the moment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp40NIuWq80 (making it for vegan Kimchi). I am safely assuming that gourmet vegan community would be super interested in your expert thoughts!

There’s another brand called Megachef that’s a Thai brand that I get at my local Chinese market. It has really nice flavor and minimal ingredients too.

Squid brand has the most rotten smell. It's smell terrible but it make some dish taste better than other fish sauce brands. It's not suitable for every dish .If you're new to this brand.Don't forget to buy other brand too. Squid brand often used in tom yum,tom kha gai ,best for meat stir fry dish but not suitable for fired rice and vegetable stir fry.Never ever put it directly on the rice ,boiled eggs ,clear soup or other vegetable dish. Not for chilli fish sauce .The smell is too rotten.I was throw the whole soup pot away because of this fish sause.

I wished Ive come across this sooner. I lived in Canada for 8 years and its usually a hit or miss everytime I need to buy condiment.

Being a student living by myself, Im usually stuck with the purchase until it’s either used up or left expired on the shelf. I also use the squid now, but before that I was stuck with a few other brands that didnt taste ‘right’ before. Its hard judging the taste based on the package. And the fact that somethings ‘made in thailand’ doesnt help.

Before I watch your vdo on coconut milk, i was always doubting myself if the canned version was really the one most thai people use (famous chaokoh brand). Because the texture and smell are sooo different from the actual thing itself. It tasted like they have added coconut oil to boost up the flavour which is not there in normal milk. Thanks for doing this. Your tips and reviews are very much appreciated.

I was not a big fan of Red Boat. I am a fan of their online marking, it is impressive. I would not waste your money on red boat, if you want to copy a dish you had overseas.

I viewed this video a while back and should have watched it again before shopping today. Just got back from tha Asian market where I needed to find fish sauce. I saw the Squid brand there but a customer told me that when she cooks, she uses the Three Crabs product ($4.89), so I got that one. The label does say to refrigerate after opening.

Let me tell you, the fish sauce I had in my pantry was the first one reviewed, Lucky brand. I remember pouring some into a spoon and tasting it and yes, you're right, it just tasted like salty water. I am happy that you gave your seal of approval on Three Crabs. It's what's in my pantry (fridge) now. I might even grab up some Squid brand fish sauce the next time I go shopping and compare the two.

Thank you, Pai, for an informative video for us Westerners.

Red Boat and Mega Chef are the "fancy" sauces (which are good). the best medium fish sauce our family uses since we were young is the Pantai "Shrimp" label one – better smelling than the squid one (also hard to find but easier nowadays)!

Thank you for an informative video. I was able to buy Thai Kitchen Premium fish Sauce at my local market. They have a good selection of Asian condiments, but not in a variety of brands. This has three ingredients. Do you have any opinion on this fish sauce? Thank you.
