You really should add clearing the pins of fish to your guide, I had zero luck until I tried that and it was way easier, I got the catfish on my first try and I was trying for hours beforehand
For anyone having trouble catching lord chapu chapu, try clearing the entire pond of fish before exiting and entering. And make sure you use your joy stick as well as using A, I found it was the only way to get it to move toward me, move it in the opposite of where it's moving toward, left or right and you'll start reeling it in.
