you are actually right, you can only pick winners for your own pond in koi dealers..
if you want the premium fish to win the prices you MUST go pick them in japan, they ARNT sold by the numbers to dealers across the world..
because, breeders dont sell top quality by numbers, if they have a koi in their stock that has potential it is not even sold, they put them in the mudponds and grow them year by year untill they reach a point where the quality isnt really improving or the chance of fail will get bigger, then they sell it at the highest prices posible..
so. dont expect to find a champion a place like "this"
But, you should just pick the colors you like and expect them to be nice for a while.. usually they dont improve to much as they get larger, they normaly get worse.. BECAUSE the koi breeder has sold them at the time he expect them to look their best or they dont have any potential left.

normaly, you can just expect one color koi to keep its color.. by picking Kin Kikokuryu that looks great as young koi, you are taking a risk… they dont keep up to well, Ive had several and just one is "ok" by now..

sekond, there is a reason why koi shows has prices for baby champion and diffrent sizes and catagories.. to find a baby champion myou might have to spend about 800-1000 USD for just one koi and you still arnt sure to win. ( a friend used that amount just before a koi show, picking from japan, and it still didnt win ! )

about sizes.. pretty much depends on genes, sex and variant.. female grow faster.. chagoi ( and others ) get big and friendly.. but you still need the right genes to get a big jumbo koi..

Ugh, took me a long time to figure out what he was saying. Ki Mizuho Ogon. A long time ago we had something quite similar in our pond and I've never seen anything like it locally thereafter. Either that or it was Doitsu Ki Matsuba… I have no idea how to tell the difference.

Put the little ones in the pond because mosquito larvae are great. Add some scuds to the pond and let it algae up a little. Don't add gambusia or other mosquito larvae eaters until the koi are big enough to eat them, then add the livebearers for continual and sustainable live food.

I didn't look at how old this video is. But if you want big koi grow them in green water. I believe this tip/trick whatever you want to call it don't get the respect it deserves.
