Meh I was a little disappointed with this side quest. I completed it from start to finish in about 2 hours. Gar was the first fish hooked after reaching that point so that didn't take long. I spent maybe 10min fishing for the grouper and it was the 5th or 6th fish I hooked and I caught it on my first try. Fishing is fairly simple in this game, pull when tension is off screen, stop pulling once it's on-screen. Besides, the fish always gives away what side it's about to turn to a slightly before the arrow shows up. It's a long fight but it's not hard at all. Spent maybe 1000 durability catching it.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but the murk grouper will only appear on the radar once you reach level 10 in Noctis' fishing skill, which kinda sucks. But I still managed to successfully fish mine on second try at level 8, and it was only around 155 pounds (can't remember it's exact weight), which was a bit disappointing lol. I also recommend using the Llymalaen reel, which you can get from the mini-game in Altissia, as it is better than the Nereid reel. Hope this helps some of you who are looking to catch that giant grouper. :)

I found it easier to turn off the music. I was able to focus and hear when the fish started to make splashing sounds before it rose to the top of the water so I could anticipate a change in direction. Plus the music gave that "Dont fuck up now" pressure on me.

I keep seeing this while I'm just starting out fishing. I swear I had it bite once but the line broke just before I could reel him in. I think it was the Bomber: Thunder Bomb lure I was using because I thought the fish might be a bass. For whatever reason I can't seem to get it to bite anymore so I guess I'll just wait til I get the quest later in the game.

Dont know if this was in there, BUT…. I just caught my first one today 203Lb… The TRICK was this…. Dont only reel when your controller stops vibing, reel EVERY time that "tension" thing on your screen disapears, AND be ready to let it off in the iNSTANT that "tension" thing pops back up. Even if its just a tap on your trigger while "tension" is not on screen, it all ads up with this badboy. That was the deal clencher for me after DAYS of trying and wondering how "they" did it!!! God Bless, and happy hunting.

Used basically what you had, except I used the Big Blaze Bamahut lure I got from Liege of the Lake, this way my blue circle blinks telling me exactly where he is rather than trial and error how you did it. Works like a charm.
    Mine weighed 223 lbs
