I will look under rocks for size only , but if you are a fly purist here some 10O year old advice from my 105 year old g grandfather, get some fly tape and hang it up the night before you fish near the river to get a general idea of what’s there and use fresh tape to see what s going on throughout the day .., you guys make great content thx for the hard work .. I’m going to buy your fly s

What is your go to method when you can't find any bugs in the water? I consistently look for bugs underneath rocks in my local rivers and streams and I feel like never see any. Am I just missing them? Do I need to turn over more rocks? Curious if you guys have ever faced this issue.

I got drunk one night a made an all white silk mayfly nymph so I figure why not try it and the messed up thing was it out fished all my other nymphs the Brook trout absolutely smashed what I call the silk ghost

Here is an alternative approach – 1. forget about bug life, 2. Tie one of the classic patterns – pheasant tail (frenchie), hares hair, perdigon and maybe a streamer, 3. Try them all until you get a bite, 4. Now focus on presentation… I usually carry no more than 5-6 patterns and have never been skunked even once in the last 4 years (I fish twice a week 😉)… essentially, I don’t try to please fish with variety – I make them eat what I have 🙂

1:08 I’m about 90% sure that you’re at the lower Provo by my Aunt and Uncle’s property. I was just there on Friday and thanks to your videos and the guys down at fly fish food, something finally clicked and I was able to catch 8 fish. I caught my PB and caught a couple fish on a fly I had tied the week before. I was pretty stoked!

I like to net the water when I first get to the river. I have a 18” wide by 8” deep net/mesh, I net the top 8” of the water to see what’s just under the surface. Then I stand up river of it and lower it to the bottom, stir up the bottom with my feet then see what I’ve caught. And of course I turn over rocks at the waters edge.
