I had the same sort of thing happen on the Beaverkill on the very lower section where the "roads stack". Square jawed Wall street looking frat boy guy with 4K worth of gear on opposite bank has dozens of large fish rising on his side. Hendricksons. But of course, he's not hooking any. Wading or casting all the way across would cause drowning, or he would need two entire fly lines tied together. There's a good fish rising on my side in a pocket, 10 feet from the bank, so I start working it . He's like "fish rising over there!" Like he should have rights to it also. (gives me hand flip geture and a scowl. ) I was like " dude, no way you're gonna reach it, and you have dozens over there, come on, man. So I land it , a 19" brown . Afterward I accidentally fin- hooked another one the same size , and of course it takes me into my backing . My rod is bent double as I try to not over stress it, and just land it. He must've hated that. I landed that one too. I left soon after. Yes, learn how to share a little. Guys expect to have an entire 1/2 mile stretch of a blue ribbon river all to themselves . On a Saturday in May. It gets even more hilarious on the Main Stem Delaware , where the pools can be a mile long. Then it's the gnarly PA guys versus the hoidy-toidy NY guys. Small stream etiquette is obviously a lot trickier. Ironically, your guy probably spooked all the fish on his side by thrashing across to yell at you. Then he falls in and dies. How to stress out your clientele.
Love fly fishing since getting into it, everyone is super friendly and the more experienced dudes share tips when they talk to me. BUT god forbid you have a spinning rod most of them will treat you like absolute trash, like sir your more than double my age and I switch up my rods while im here…some days they dont want flies and hit spoons or phobe's. So i feel your pain man some people are just weird.
I disagree with you but I lived right on the river for more than 8 years. Only out of staters and guys without etiquette try to use the excuse that the farmington is busy. As you demonstrated in your own video its very easy to carve off your own space. If you choose not to, then you can deal with guys mouthing off. You and Zach have something in common, you pimp nature for money. My response to Zach would be stfu I dont come out here to talk to people.
The flyfishers here are scum. I canoe here daily and have an altercation literally every day because some fly fisher like this guy hates anyone being around them
Great video. And great river.. i grew up fishing the farmington lived in ct till i was 26. Moved to pa in 94 lol do the math. Aaaanyway i go back home every fall a d fish the farmy and yes it has changed alot. I spin and flyfish… but i feel sometimes the fly guys look down on me when i fish with spin equip. I practice catch n release and handle the fish well.. i was in the fly shop t ok replenish a few rapalas i figured i would patronize the establishment. And i felt like the answers were short n abrupt. Jus a vibe i got there. Hope. They always dont treat spin guys like that. Anyway. I plan to go back this fall again n fish. Hope you have a better trip next time there. I will even patronize the fly shop again. Great shop. Maybe they will open up alittle more.. i have lots of experience fishing trout there and would like to share stories n tactics. Good luck fishing
Every river fishes differently. The Farmi gets stocked with a ton of fish and particularly this spring is getting hammered so there is going to be a lot of guys on the water.
Where I fish not nearly as many fish and not nearly as many anglers so it’s simply wrong to walk anywhere near someone else’s water.
I was with the guide the day you walked right into the area that we were fishing. You were 100% in the wrong. I have attached a link to the CT Wildlife Harassment Rules below in case you are not familiar. If you want to come from NY and fish our rivers, please familiarize yourself with our laws. Yes we can claim that area. It's one reason the law exist, to protect other anglers from doing exactly what you did to us. But forget the law, it's common courtesy.
Honestly, I can't even believe I am responding or making you aware of these rules. Why should I even have to when, as you said, the river is huge and there is plenty of room for everyone? So why did you feel it necessary to fish the same pocket water I was fishing? We 100% planned on fishing that seam on that side, the one you pointed to…
When you walk in on another angler, politely ask them where they plan to fish. And and if for some reason you can't ask them, just move onto another area. And no, an angler can't claim the whole river. But we were in our right to claim that area we originally wading across to until you decided to jump right on top of us.
On this particular day, there were not a lot of people on the river. So you had tons of options, but you picked the one right on top of the water I was working. Why??? To provoke a reaction for your Video?

I can see why people think you're in the right given this video. The video makes it look like you're really far away from us, but you're not. And the guide had to yell so you could hear him over the sound of river, so it makes him look like he's "losing his cool"…. But he was 100% trying to politely explain some etiquette. Which is simply "communicate"…He even said to you, "No hard feelings…." which you conveniently left out of the video.

I thought that the Guide broke your rod! When I read your title I was WTF?! I fish the Farmington a lot. Why people need a Guide on that river is beyond me. In that situation he was wrong and you were correct as I see it. I have run into some chooch's up there. That's why I stop going up there during the weekend and the first few weeks of the season. Bu,t most people are very nice. That being said good etiquette is not squeezing in between two anglers and claiming your spot. Many anglers work a seem or run when swinging wet flies or streamers. Ask before you get in if you are entering the same side and communicate. 99.9% of the time people are accommodating. I meet good people that way and even share flies at times. I noticed that you are out of State. Thanks for the revenue with your license. My advice is when fishing out of State stop by the local fly shop ask a few questions get a feel of the area. As they say. When in Rome, do as the Roman's do. Nice video. That was fun. Hope that you got your rod fixed at no cost. Be well.
