Great video you made since to myself on the art of fly casting. I'm trying to learn to fly fish. I been spin fishing my whole life and nothing makes me happier than trout fishing but always wanted to be able to catch trout on a fly rod. I'm learning and getting my gear and knowledge together and I'm going to try this weekend and I'm leaving my spin poles at home so I'm committed on the fly rod. Thanks
Luckily I'm pro at darts, paper airplanes, hammering nails, painting brush flinging and opening screen doors. So I should be pretty awesome at fly casting.
I live in New Zealand, and have been fly fishing for over 45 years, after being taught by a late friend who was one of the best guides in the country. I've even tried to teach a few friends how to cast, some with success, and others not so good. With all my experience, I must say that this is THE BEST explanation and demonstration of the mechanics of fly fishing I've EVER seen!! Thanks Brian, even I got quite a bit out of this video!! Sometimes, early in the season, my casting can be a bit crappy, so I'll look at your videos and be instantly cured!! GREAT video!!
Love your tutorials – one question pls – when practising casting do you use the entire line system (Line, leader and fly) or can you use only the line. T.I.A.
I started fly fishing (with a level line) when I was 11 YO and I'm 53 now. This was helpful to identify some bad habits I have. Great video! Brian is an excellent teacher! Thank you! BTW, instead of hammer or paper airplane, I have used Big Spoon of Spaghetti. LOL
I'm have always want to learn fly fishing and know when the time is come and i found this "how to" video i hypt to go out and learn it big thx for all the small and big tips and tricks on it 🙂
Thanks a lot for putting effort into these videos. A family member bought me a nice rod and reel about 3 years ago. As a lifelong fisherman I know 1 thing is true about any new fishing technique: you have to pay your dues. Thanks for making this less painful
SORCERY I tell you. Y'all make it look so easy. Just starting out at 53 . But these videos are a lot of help. I started out looking like I'm driving a mule team with a whip. lol So thanks for the on-line classes. Tight lines from Va.
Brian, thank you. I bought my first fly rod and reel used at a local fly shop few weeks ago , luckily he was willing to meet me outside after we struck a deal on the phone so I was able to get the goods even during the issues. I was up late nights for couple evenings prior to this, watched episode 14, fly casting, pop pop pop pop hahaha!, on repeat a few times and went out for a toss in skippack creek PA. I caught two and a half browns the first time taking a fly rod to water. Needless to say im hooked, pun intended. God bless and keep you fishing, Brian. I will be patronizing mad river for supplies on a regular basis solely because of these videos.
This is one of the most informative intro video to fly fishing I’ve seen so far…I’m new to fishing in general but fly fishing has really caught my interest, I hope to really get into it one day, and this video has been a start
That hammer analogy was the best explanation I've ever heard, and gives me hope because I can't throw to save my life but I can hammer pretty darn well!
thanks you so much for teaching me to fly cast
What rod do you have?

Never been hit with this many analogies in one video.

I haven't fly fished in 20 years and needed a refresher, this was perfect!

Good video, but do we need that many analogies as to what fly casting is like?
