I’m a little higher level than you so may not apply to you just yet but I like using small cutbait on a 3/0 or 4/0 hook with at least 10 pound line. Rods and reels don’t matter so much but I do recommend plenty of line capacity because I have been spooled by a hard fighting catfish before.
My biggest was 11lbs flathead caught it float fishing the nehrrin river and just like you was worried about i didn't have a keepnet or stringer big enough to keep mine
You can buy shiners with the cash you earn fishing when you hit lvl 25 if i remember correctly but i for sure know that you will be able to get shiners by cash

You need to keep your rod up when playing fish, it helps avoid slack and the fish slipping the hook.

if u want to catch big catfish use Hook #4 with pet food or shiners, becuse you will catch alot Young catfish with hook #2
