I also just started fly fishing and you are absolutely right. In my case my dad had an old DAM rod lying around that he never uses, but i got myself a new reel, line and some flies and i am catching my first fish with it. Amazing Sport, only thing thats really expensive over here in Germany is the price you pay for one day at a good river…
Thanks for the great video! Looking to buy my first kit but would also like to be able to fish salmon. Would a 5 or 6wt hold up? I live in British Columbia
I just got my first fly fishing setup today fairly enough i spent 280 dollars and that was with a little discount from my friend at the tackle shop, but i wanted something really specific as i am moving very close to a rive with salmon, so i spent a little extra but you definatley wouldnt need to spend near that much.
Trying to be affordable but you got a picture of a guy sitting in a $300,000 Bentley haha, great video and Iโm learning so much from these thanks a lot Brian
great video series thanks!! ive got more info from you guys than from any source i can find here in New zealand .. and this is supposed to be fly fishing nirvana here … people here only want to get you to pay for a expensive guide/lodge and not teach a beginner anything
Annnnnd subscribed! You are amazing! Thank you for all of your videos on fly fishing. I'm from CA and all I've ever used in conventional spinning reels. Moved to Montana and everyone around here fly fishes. Man it seemed so expensive when I went to the fly shop and they showed me their $200+ reels. I'm glad I found your channel.
I have been looking into fly fishing. But I noticed the lines are floating….Sinking….Suspended….Is that the hook? You need separate rigs for separate presentations? Don't get me wrong, I am not by far knocking the industry. I am VERY interested and want to start my new addiction but for once I want to go in with eyes wide open and wallet tightly shut. Love your videos, very well done.
Long ago I used old bamboo found in a house I bought on the Delaware R. in upstate N.Y., caught tons of fish. After I no longer had that rig I bought a cheapy at Walmart , still catching tons of fish and having a great time. I saw the sport change on the Delaware over 30 years ago when the $2000 fishermen showed up, but the old timer with vintage gear, catching all the fish shoulder to shoulder with them won my heart. Maybe someday I might treat myself but until then I'll keep catching fish with my $50 rig!
Got into fly fishing this summer for cheap. My Grandpa gave me his old 7wt, 6 1/2' Eagle Claw trail master pack rod, and my Father in Law gave me his old Martin click and pawl reel. Went to sportsmans warehouse and got the scientific anglers air cell line that was in this video for $30, 24 flies for $24 bucks, and a couple leaders and tippet for under $10. Been catching trout all summer! The most important thing I feel, is how you maintain and setup your gear, and even old gear can still catch fish if you take care of it.
Great video once again Brian! I got my start In fly fishing by a friend giving me a bamboo rod he found in a rental house. I kept it for a couple of years and was afraid to use it. I then traded it for a modern rod and reel and fell in love with the sport. And you are so right! Bass angling with common gear can be so so expensive compared to fly fishing! Keep up the great videos
I've been using the same 6wt Cabela's combo for a few years now, caught bass, panfish, and trout, no need for an expensive setup! Check sales as well, I just picked up 5 Cabela's CGR fiberglass rods for $15 each! Fly fishing doesn't need to be expensive! Love the message y'all are sending, this sport truly can be for everyone!
