First calling a Bowfin a dog fish is a poor description of a great gamefish. Second Bowfins becomes lethargic once water temperatures reach 80˚ Fahrenheit. Bowfins caught in water temperatures from 58˚ to 68˚ Fahrenheit are much more aggressive and a very different fish to catch. If you leave a Bowfin in a net for long, they will bite thru it and be gone. Holding one freshly caught is almost impossible and they can and will bite you given the chance. The Bowfin I catch are dark green mottled with creamy white. They destroy lures and break line better than any other fish I know of. They are number one predators of their domain and survived millions of years longer than any other gamefish. You may kiss a bass but I don’t recommend swapping spit with a Bowfin because they bite like a son of bitch. Great video, but (Needs warning Directions for first timers)
On thing ive found to use that the bowfin absolutely slam is a weightless white trick worm. You cast it out and let it slowly sink and do little suddle twitches every 3 or 4 seconds
I'm gonna love this series! Really awesome that your giving some to these to fish! Totally agree that they're underrated, one of my bucket list fish! Good luck on that record fish!
when i was 14 years old we were fishing for them .best baits was minnow and worms.as soon it's near their mouth i have never seen one that said no.they just can't resist .float is a must.we were fshing for them in less than 2 feet.
gatorgar would be a really fun show. just to promote them.so many mongoloids still killing them with a bow just for fun.they are now extinct from a lot of states, but since the asian carp invasion they've got the great idea to reintroduce gatorgar.with all these carps they will be really big.so many losers can't catch a single fish so they blame gar.but they were there since millions years and guess what they have never been the cause of a fish extinction.on the other hand i think i can't count the numbers of species that have been eradicated by human
As someone who watches your videos from abroad, Australia in my case, it's awesome to learn about these wonderful fish that really does seem underrated. Hope you guys smash a monster and can't wait for the rest of the series
Me and my brother used to catch a lot of dogfish when we were kids. A Paylake we used to go to used to stock them pretty heavy on occasions. Extreme great fun and great memories!
Not true about the dot on tail only being males, I've never seen a Bowfin over 30 with one, it's a adolescent thing. They do NOT breath air that long out of water. You guys shouldn't be telling people to leave them on shore for a hour. It's a survival thing to assist in gulpping air in stagnate back waters.
Now that was a cool video, as usual they always are. I see from the other comments, bowfin have bony mouths. One other question, do they have teeth? So I’m guessing you don’t lip’um like a bass. But grab under gill flap… Maybe explain more about their mouths in future vids. Can’t wait to see more! U guys rule!!🎣👍
had no idea the bowfin record is that small. I'll drum a photo of the one my son caught up in Minocqua. I am sure it was over 35". I'll get back to you guys.

Props for this, subbed from the concept. You guys kicked ass
Never seen one of those before. Looks like a mix of burbot, lake trout and pike. That's one hell of a neat fish. Looking forward to this.

Try some scent and let him chew on it a few seconds before setting the hook youll increase your catch rate expedentially
I caught a 35 inch dog fish in Minnesota on a night crawler. Fun af fight
you real way too fast both of you
During the great depression they were very popular fish in the rural south to put in gumbo and jambalaya as a substitute to expensive shrimp.
that pike had esox scoliosis.
My brother and I would fish for days catching dogs as kids. I think our biggest was 28". Glad to see others having a blast catching em.
That was So COOL! You Guy's ROCK!

Our Wisconsin drum record is also quit attainable. Bowfin are also fun to bowfish for
In Va we call them Grindell (Grinnell in the swamps down east). Biggest I've seen here is 12lb, my PB is 10lbs
