Even though the Gunnison Route is supposedly the easiest route into the Black Canyon, it is really brutal and in high water doesn't give you a ton of access to good fly water.  The routes into the Gunnison Gorge are both easier and give more fly fishing access.

I have fished this river for 17 years. The fish keep getting bigger. Outside of Red Rock Canyon. I think the best fishing is between Pine Creek and East Portal. If you hike down past the Wall. Constantly pulling in Rainbows and Browns averaging 18". Even caught a couple lake trout a few years back when the runoff was crazy high.

I did this same route. Yep, the hike down is much harder than the hike up in my opinion especially with a full pack for camping for a few days. My legs were wobbly when I got to the bottom from trying to counteract all the loose scree. But it was worth it when I got there. The hike out was a workout, but a lot easier on the legs. Overall it was a real challenge, but stunningly beautiful. When you leave, start out early so you don't have to be exposed in the sun.

Your a stud! Awsome location. Been there every year since 1993 just to fish SW colorado and the gunnison is the king. We go down the SOB. First trip I was 19, now Im 37. I dont expect it will ever get old, though I might.

man it looks like you had a blast. my cousin lives a few hours away from there and we're going to try and make a run out there some time. looks like it's chock full of browns. that was nice footage of the scenery. now i know what to expect if we camp by the river. it looks like you had your food hanging over the river… are there bears around there?
