thanks for the tips , it helps a bit but all in all I stand by my opinion, the fishing minigame is utter crap and not fun at all.
Now I'm sure some people with good dexterity will manage and some will have fun and I'm happy for them but for me it's really a chore.

Go to the little lake in the hidden forest. You can fish there with no effort until lvl. 2 when you can get bait and crab cages. After that just buy a bunch of crab cages and bait, then put them all around town until you max your fishing level. You'll have the best fishing rod, and bait so the fishing minigame will get super easy.

Just a point I have not seen addressed – maybe the problem could sometimes be with the mouse, not the player?
Also, if you cannot catch anything how will your skill go up?

Thank-you I really enjoyed your tutorial; it was done in a really relaxed, fun way and above all it solved my problem of being perhaps the worst fisherman in Stardew Valley (or at least tied for worst with your other viewers)!   The way you explain and demonstrate this is a great help and has now made me enjoy what was once the most frustrating part of this otherwise crazily addictive little video game!

Definitely helpful, especially for the hard to catch fish even if your skill is high and you still struggle.
Also, I LOVE your Zoolander reference in the title. xD

This mini game is ridiculously difficult. I mean ridiculous! I have, in many years of gaming come across one this difficult. If I had known how difficult it was I would not have gotten the game. In fact…if you get frustrated easily don't get this game. The fishing game is a bit of a deal breaker. You can not finish the game without the fishing skill and yet it feels impossible.

Thanks for the tip ^^, I'm in my 2nd Year of Summer and caught just 1 fish because I find fishing is so hard to do. Maybe because of the continuous clicking. But I will try your tips on these :D

Guys trust me I'm 100 hours in fishing seems hard I thought the same but it takes a little practice every level you get with fishing makes fishing rate faster and boosts your catch bars size at first I recommend getting some cash and buying fish stew from the fish bait shop on the beach check your tv every day for the fortune teller if your luck is good or best also helps your chances of getting more rare fish and I think boosts catch rate also when you get your fiber glass rod it makes fishing more easy and you can use bait also helps trust me fishing is hard at first but it gets stupid easy later on also fish on the beach your first 3 or 4 levels it's close to the vender and the fish in the sea are more easy to catch

I was severely angered by this minigame. This is possibly one of the most ridiculous game mechanics I've ever dealt with.
But you've calmed me down with this tip. I actually will try this. It's definitely a lot more helpful than 'git gud'.

Call me crazy, but there is something satisfying about catching a pufferfish or super cucumber without using a mod….its like all the modders in diablo 3 and borderlands….its too easy

I always catch fish in front of Jodi's house. Its the best place so far for every season. All of my catch is gold. The best part is I don't get a single Carp. All the fish I sell are expensive ones. Try it and let me know. :-D

Or install the mod that cuts out the mini game.
I would prefer an option where it randomly does it for you, like the chest key unlock options in Oblivion/Skyrim.

Great work on the fishing tutorial. Here are a few other tips to help you understand and improve your skills (in-game and gameplay skills).

    Increasing your fishing skill:
-reduces the trash you pick up, increases your max cast range
-unlocks new rods at lvl 2 and lvl 6 (bait slot then bait+tackle
-improves the ratio of rarer fish
-reduces erratic movement in the fishing minigame
-reduces energy cost of casting your line
-increases the size of your fishing bar (that green bar in the minigame)

Adding bait to a fishing rod:
    -reduces ratio of thrash item
-reduces max time delay before a fish nibbles
(Exception for Magnet, this item increases the time before a nibble but greatly increases treasure spawn chances)

Adding tackles have many different effects
-Spinner reduces max time delay before a fish nibbles
-Dressed Spinner greatly reduces max time delay before a fish nibbles
-Treasure Bobber slightly increases chance for a treasure spawn chances
-Trap Bobber reduces fish escape speed by 66% when not reeling them in (My personnal favorite for those very tough catches)
-Barbed Hook makes the fishing bar cling to the fish, reducing your control over the minigame but making easy fish easier prey (Not a fan at all)
-Lead Bobber reduces the bouncing of the bar if it touches the bottom at great speed

Remember that your fishing bar is affected by momentum and gravity. What you do when you hold down the mouse button is tug the line upwards. The longer you hold, the harder you tug. Rapid succession of light clicks (not instant ultra spamming) will keep the bar leveled. Clicking once or twice before the bar hits the bottom at great speed will reduce the bounceback effect.

With all these powers combined, you too can become the stuff of legends. But not unless you try.

    Now get anglin'!

Two fishing tips: (1) quality of fish is determined based on the distance from the bobber to the nearest walkable tile, and (2) when casting, after releasing the mouse but before the cast lands, you can use the WASD keys to control where it lands a little. HTH :)

  15. Jay B says:

If you see bubbles/ripples in the water, cast your line on them or as close to them as you can. You will get a bite almost instantly and quite frequently too, at least until the bubbles disappear, but by then you would've already caught a LOT of fish :)
