I'm just getting into fly fishing but I don't have a lot of places locally that I can do so. Also I think you'll get more hookups if you do a strip set rather than lifting the rod like spinning rod set the hook technique at least that's what the guy who showed me to fly fish said.

ANGLER BE AWARE. Fishing the Elk River is VERY costly. I fell for the hype of the “world class river” and after spending nearly $5,000.00 for a trip from Los Angeles to Fernie, got skunked. After paying $80.00 for a yearly fishing license (non-resident and over (8) days of fishing), I had to pay $20.00 every day that I fished a river. So, even though this was to be a fishing trip I ended up doing a lot of sightseeing instead.
Unless you can afford to pay $625.00 per day for rafting (one or two angler is the same cost), don’t hope for easy access to the river in many places. They also suggest (expect) $100.00 a day as tip to the guide.
That is $725.00 plus $20.00 each day in addition to the regular fishing license. I was there for 11 days and not once saw a warden checking on anybody. In fact a kid that was using an illegal lure with treble hook told me he has not been inspected for nearly (5) years!
There are two fly shops in the town that have the guide service and merchandise. I had boxes and boxes of flies, yet according to one salesman who said (“even a cigarette butt can catch fish in this river”) it was not good enough. However, their $3.00 a fly for sale would work. There are other guide services, but without a shop. They must receive some percentage form the F&W, in addition of a $1.00 they charge the customer for issuing the license. A big scam if you ask me.
I did have a great time visiting BC and Alberta. Next time I will go to Alberta, which has a cheaper license cost and no per day charge.
I don’t know where the $20.00 a day fee goes, since I did not see any work done on the river. I doubt if the residents can afford to pay that fee to fish the river that runs through their town.

I did have a great time visiting and enjoying the natural beauty of the places that I passed. I event went to Calgary and Banff in Alberta.

I'm driving to medicine hat, AB. in about a week to see family. I'm starting from vancouver island and I was hoping to stop and fly fish at the some of the rivers on the way. I know that you may not be familiar with all of those locations but i do know you're good at what you do and it would be a huge help to get some recomendations. I'm taking the crowsnest highway and the south yellowhead so any rivers with easy access from those or near them would be perfect. I know it's a lot to ask, but I would be very thankful if I could get some feedback.

One of your best videos! I love your attitude – caring about getting the fish, but still positive and smiling all the way. Wish I could always have that attitude on the water.

I enjoyed your film greatly, just got back to fly fishing after 28 years away. If it was me and I missed two early on I'd be checking the fly, just to make sure. I bought some unbranded hooks (big mistake) and had three pretty small trout straighten them. Needless to say they were destroyed! Good luck!

Nice video and great looking stretch of water. I moved from Colorado down to Georgia and I really miss being able to look into some clear water. It's all muddy soup down here!

You released the fish, did you not? Regardless if you release it or not, at least do the best you can to minimize harming it before you can kill it, id that makes sense.

Don't let these youtube freaks get you down man. Theyre just jealous that all they do is sit in their parents basement and mooch off them. In the age of couch potatoes and the anonymity of the internet it has created a very very special class of stupid people unfortunately. (btw, I think you can get a little closer to the holes to help you with your hook setting) Happy Fishing!
